Vo Trong Nghia receives Prince Claus Award in Hanoi

On Thursday 30 March, H.E. Ambassador Nienke Trooster presented the Prince Claus Award to architect Vo Trong Nghia in a ceremony organized by the Dutch Embassy in Vietnam. The programme included a presentation by Vo Trong Nghia on ‘Greening the City’ and short films about the Award and his work.

HE Ambassador Nienke Trooster stated, “We all have a responsibility to build a green future, in Vietnam and elsewhere. And in Mr. Nghia we have an ally[…] Mr. Nghia, I am proud that my government sponsors the Prince Claus Fund with its worldwide mission to promote culture as a driver of social development. And I am proud that we can add yet another Vietnamese artist to its famous list of laureates.”

In addition to speeches by Vo Trong Nghia and the ambassador, the programme concluded with speakers such as Prof. Andy van den Dobbelsteen PhD MSc, Professor of Climate Design & Sustainability, Head of Department of Architectural Engineering + Technology, Delft University of Technology; and architect Hoang Thuc Hao, Vietnamese Architect of the Year 2015 and 2016 recipient of the SIA-GETZ Award for emergent architects in Asia.

According to the 2016 Prince Claus Fund Awards Committee Report, Vo Trong Nghia is recognized for “his striking, environmentally friendly architecture that is reviving the urban landscape of Vietnam; for (…) [balancing] culture and nature (…); for presenting viable, sustainable, built alternatives, demonstrating to residents, officials and developers that such change is possible; (…) and for promoting architecture as a form of activism for social change and moving it forward to a greener future.”

Vo Trong Nghia is een architect die duurzame architectuur op de kaart zet door lokale materialen en traditionele ambachtelijkheid te combineren met 21e-eeuwse ontwerpen. Zijn ‘groene programma’ richt zich niet alleen op grote stadsgebouwen, maar ook op duurzame maar goedkope woningen voor afgelegen dorpsgemeenschappen. Zijn benadering van de stedenbouw is bepalend voor de toekomst van de architectuur en het stedelijke landschap in Vietnam. Centraal in zijn werk staat de fysieke omgeving als middel om het contact te herstellen tussen mens en natuur.
