Former chair of the Prince Claus Awards Committee Peter Geschiere (Chairman) studied history and anthropology in Amsterdam, and has worked in various parts of Africa. Until 2002 he was Professor of African Anthropology at the University of Leiden and he is currently attached to the University of Amsterdam as research professor. His publications include works on state formation in West Africa, the dynamics of local cultures in politico-economic changes, conservation and exploitation of tropical rain forests, autochthony, citizenship and exclusion. Geschiere is co-editor of Ethnography, and his publications include The Perils of Belonging (2009) and The Modernity of Witchcraft (1997). A member of the Netherlands Royal Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of Cameroon, Board member of the International African Institute (London) and Chair of the ABV (Dutch Anthropological Association), in 2002 Geschiere was nominated Distinguished Africanist of the Year by the African Studies Association (USA).
